Apple patches ability for one app to see other installed apps in iOS 11.1.1 Affecting Niantic Anti Cheat

Trainers,

As previously reported, Niantic had introduced a new Anti-cheat feature in the recent update popularly know as App Blacklist, The new feature scans player’s device for third-party cheating apps. If any are detected, the game refuses to start with the following blacklist warning screen text:

“We have detected software that can interfere with the operation of Pokémon GO on your device. This includes applications that falsify your location. Using unauthorized software that directly impacts Pokémon GO is a violation of Niantic’s Terms of Service and can result in the loss of your account. You will need to uninstall any such applications in order to continue gameplay.

As of today, it seems that Niantic’s blacklisting security measure has come to an end for iOS, opening gates for iOS users to spoof freely.

According to a tweet from Pepijn Bruienne, a Mac enterprise administrator and a Mac administrator at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, the bug that enabled apps to sniff around the installed apps list is no longer active:

Although for Android the security measure is still active, monitoring the installed Apps in players phone. It has been reported that the warning screen is also triggered by using a third party IV checker.

Checking Users installed App for catching Spoofers seems to be a bad practice by Niantic,

Here are the reactions of some Redditors

elgato49 says

Couldn’t agree more. Letting Niantic spy on our devices to catch spoofers is like letting the government install bugs in our home to catch burglars. Not worth it. From the warning waves that hit the spoofers before, i think Niantic can stop them if they want to, they just chose not to.

FlameGrilledTauros says

If Niantic was caught exploiting this, they’d most likely be kicked from the app store. Or at least get a very stern “Change this immediately” from Apple
